Tax on lottery winnings in the UK
A UK lottery prize is not subject to income tax or capital gains tax when you receive it. Tax can still come into the picture in four situations.
1. Interest and investment returns
The prize is tax free, but what it earns afterwards is not. Interest on savings, dividends and gains on investments bought with the money are taxed in the normal way.
2. Annuity prizes
Set For Life pays £10,000 a month; the monthly payment has a capital element that is tax free and an interest element that is subject to tax. The operator states the payment does not fall below £10,000 a month after tax at current rates. Powerball's UK jackpot is advertised after UK tax, but investment returns within the 30-year annuity are taxable. Annuity calculator
3. If you are not a UK resident
Powerball prizes come from the USA, and the operator notes that for non-UK residents the jackpot may be subject to tax. Other countries tax lottery prizes differently, so residency matters more than where the ticket was bought.
4. Giving money away
Gifts from winnings can fall within inheritance tax rules if the person making the gift dies within seven years. For syndicates, HMRC Statement of Practice E14 confirms no inheritance tax arises on winnings paid out under an agreement made before the win — which is why a signed syndicate agreement matters.
