About Powerball — questions people ask

What time is the Powerball draw in UK time?

The draw takes place at 10.59pm Eastern Time in the United States, which is the early hours of the following morning in the UK. Our pages show the UK date and time for every draw, adjusted automatically for both countries' clock changes.

Can I take a Powerball jackpot as a lump sum?

Usually no. The UK jackpot is paid as a first payment of 1 or 2 per cent, chosen by the winner, followed by a 29-year stepped annuity. A lump sum applies only in four situations, including a winner not resident in the UK or the Isle of Man and a claim by a winner's estate.

Is Powerball taxed?

US withholding tax may be deducted before the money reaches the UK, because the jackpot fund is American. In the UK the capital element of each annuity payment is generally tax free and the interest element is not.

Is the advertised jackpot what I receive?

Only if you take the full 30 years of payments. The advertised figure includes investment growth over the annuity term, so any lump sum is lower.
