How an office bonus ball sweepstake works

  1. Draw up a board with the numbers 1 to 59. Each person picks (or is given) one number — print our blank board.
  2. Everyone pays the same amount for a number, before the draw.
  3. Agree in advance which draw counts (usually Saturday) and, since June 2026, which round's bonus ball — Round 1 or Round 2.
  4. The person holding the number that comes up as that bonus ball wins. All the money collected, less any reasonable costs, goes on prizes.
  5. Agree in advance what happens if the winning number wasn't taken — the prize cannot be rolled over to a later week.
The law in Great Britain In England, Wales and Scotland a sweepstake like this can run as a work lottery without a licence under the Gambling Act 2005 (Schedule 11, Part 2), if: everyone who organises it and everyone who takes part works at the same premises; it makes no profit; every ticket costs the same and is paid for up front; tickets are not passed on to others; it is only advertised at that workplace; and there is no rollover. Similar rules cover clubs and societies (private society lotteries) and people living in the same building (residents' lotteries). Northern Ireland has different rules. This is a summary, not legal advice — check the Gambling Act 2005, Schedule 11 or the Gambling Commission if you are unsure.

LotteryUK does not run, organise or take part in sweepstakes, and does not take money. We only publish the numbers.
